ASDAH Gathers Health At Every Size Experts to “Debate the Weight of the Nation”

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) May 11, 2012

On May 14 and 15 HBO will unveil its new documentary Weight of the Nation. With its tagline “to win we have to lose”, the documentary purports to outline the dangers of obesity and offer solutions for this supposed epidemic. The documentary and its surrounding trailers, website, screening materials and vast marketing apparatus has caused deep concern within the Association for Size Diversity and Health (ASDAH) an international, professional organization committed to Health At Every Size® principles. Weight of the Nation is of particular concern to the leadership and membership of ASDAH as it presents larger body size as a dire health and financial threat to our nation without presenting or even alluding to the significant body of research that conflicts with this notion. Further, the documentary presents weight loss as one of the most important “cures” for this supposed national crisis without presenting a method for said weight loss that is scientifically proven to be successful in the long term. ASDAH has presented a point by point scientific debate of many of the issues on its “Debate the Weight (of the Nation)” webpage at debatetheweight.com. The debate can be found alongside a number of other valuable resources created by noted HAES experts including ASDAH President Deb Lemire, Fall Ferguson, JD, MA, and Deb Burgard, PhD, FAED.

“While I’m sure HBO and those creating this documentary mean well, we fear it will do more harm than good,” said ASDAH president Deb Lemire. “It will manage to reinforce so many of the stereotypes surrounding people of size while fanning the flames of a nationwide obesity panic. This will be done on the basis of incomplete evidence (much of which is taken out of context) and will offer no scientifically proven method for long term weight-loss.”

The issue of long-term weight loss is an important one to many of the professionals within ASDAH. While many diets and other methods of weight reduction may be successful in the short term, there are no weight loss programs proven to be successful to any but a small handful of participants in the long run. There are no scientific studies that show statistically significant sustained reduced body size at a term of three to five years from initial weight loss.1

“Seldom are drop outs taken into account,” said Paul Ernsberger PhD, obesity researcher at Case Western Reserve University. “Drop outs from Tone Detox programs are people who either failed to lose weight or gained it all back. Also, studies fail to take into account that in the aftermath of unsuccessful weight loss resulting in a regain of the lost weight, many dieters will begin a new Tone Detox plan. The old Tone Detox that failed long ago will get the credit for the current drop in the weight roller coaster.”

A glance at the Weight of the Nation web page regarding “What Works for Successful Weight Loss” is a clear example of this phenomenon. The page cites statistics from the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) on over 10,000 people who have lost between 30 and 300 lbs. and kept it off for more than one year. Given the fact that over half of the adults in our nation are on a Tone Detox at any given time, this is a fairly small number, and one year is well under the statistical tipping point where weight regain appears in the majority of cases. There is also no evidence given regarding how many times each of these people has tried to lose weight and whether that weight loss moves them from the obese or overweight category into another. What is perhaps of greater concern is the listing of several weight loss surgery procedures on this same page with no listing of the risks that may accompany these surgeries (including serious infection, malnutrition, need for additional surgical intervention or death) the common occurrence of weight regain among those undergoing these surgeries or even increased suicide rates.2

“What we have seen so far in the previews suggests that far from being an innovative take on the issue, the HBO series trots out the same tired assumptions that lack empirical support,” says Deb Burgard, PhD, FAED. “If we don’t start asking the scientific questions about whether anyone has a way for the majority of people to sustainably change their weight, whether a weight-suppressed person has the risk profile of a never-been-fat person, whether our ‘obesity prevention programs’ increase weight stigma, or how weight stigma affects people across the weight spectrum, we will continue to throw away money and time that we cannot afford.”

The National Institute of Health (NIH) has released data that indicates that overweight people statistically live longer than their ‘normal weight’ counterparts and far longer than those who ‘underweight’.3 When exercise and Tone Detox are taken into account, even those in the ‘obese’ category live far longer than the media frenzy would have us believe. Several important studies have shown that behavior is a far better predictor of longevity than BMI and that even fat people who exercise live longer than thin people who don’t.4 And furthermore, the NIH data appears to indicate that obesity rates are not increasing exponentially, but rather are leveling off.

“The issues of weight, BMI and healthy behavior are consistently mixed up and oversimplified in order to increase readership, viewers and ratings,” said Lemire. “Although there is ample evidence that healthy behaviors are the key to longevity and quality of life independent of body size or BMI, showing headless fat people and fueling fat panic make for more popular articles and more exciting television. We invite the public to view our page at debatetheweight.com to review the evidence and draw its own conclusions.”

12th Annual Women’s Health and Fitness Expo: Weight Loss for Wellness: Lose Weight, Feel Great

12th Annual Women’s Health and Fitness Expo: Weight Loss for Wellness: Lose Weight, Feel Great

Kingston, NY (PRWEB) May 10, 2012

In addition to presentations by several nationally recognized authorities on weight control, the main stage speakers will address the benefits of maintaining an ideal weight for overall health and wellness. Two top Harvard Medical School physicians and noted authors, Dr. Marie Pasinski (neurologist) and Dr. Malissa Wood (cardiologist), will discuss the importance of a healthy lifestyle, including weight control, on heart and brain health. Experts will be available throughout the event for Q&A. This year’s Expo will also spotlight events geared to men and children. Raffle prizes will include a NordicTrack AudioStrider 990 PRO valued at $ 1499 and a spin bike.

The annual Expo attracts well over 5,000 visitors, offering more than 20 free health screenings and over 75 interactive attractions, including expert speakers, workshops, fitness demos, chef demos, spa services, and a healthy food court. Around 125 exhibitor booths and informational tables related to health and well-being participate. Visitors receive complimentary bags filled with health and wellness products and information.

The 2012 Expo theme “Weight Loss for Wellness: Lose Weight, Feel Great,” was developed with our nation’s — and our region’s — ever-alarming obesity rates in mind. (The New York State Health Department’s most recent statistics indicate that 59.6 percent of Ulster County adults and 62.6 percent of Dutchess County adults are obese or overweight.) Obesity is often accompanied by chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Lifestyle changes required to achieve and maintain weight loss can be challenging. At any point in time, one in three women and one in five men in the United States are on some kind of Tone Detox, according to registered dietician and nationally recognized nutrition expert Mary Hartley, one of this year’s main stage speakers. “These diets produce short-term weight loss but two or three years later 95 percent of traditional dieters regain the weight,” she says.

This year’s main stage speakers will include:

Mary Hartley, a registered dietitian, writer and leader in the nutrition field, will discuss the concept of “Intuitive Eating,” a non-Tone Detox approach to weight-loss that “shifts the paradigm from weight-loss to wellness, from food fear to food pleasure and from body dissatisfaction to body trust.” Hartley is the former Director of Nutrition for CalorieCount.com, a Tone Detox website owned by The New York Times. Hartley helped develop the website, which aids members in managing their diets and weight, and wrote the popular Ask Mary, your personal nutritionist column.

Dr. Marie Pasinski, a staff neurologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and a faculty member at Harvard Medical School, is the author of Boost Your Brain Power and Beautiful Brain, Beautiful You – 7 Steps to a Better, Smarter Younger You. She believes the key to changing our lives for the better involves improving our brains. Pasinski will present a program for keeping our brains in peak condition, training them with the same intent as elite athletes train their bodies;

Jessica Smith, a nationally-recognized fitness and lifestyle expert and promoter of the “10-Minute Solution” and author of Thin in 10, will discuss how exercising in short clips can improve our health and wellbeing and also fit into our lifestyle. The featured fitness expert on over 40 million boxes of Special K products, Smith has starred in 13 best-selling fitness DVD’s since 2005;

Dr. Malissa Wood, a clinical cardiologist and staff physician in the Cardiac Ultrasound Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, will present her new book, Smart at Heart: A Holistic 10-Step Approach to Preventing and Healing Heart Disease. Her approach bridges the gap between the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of a healthy heart and delivers a toolbox of new scientific findings on what women at risk of heart disease can do to improve their own health;

Diane Carbonell, one of the nation’s top weight-loss bloggers, is a formerly obese 300-pound mom who lost 150 pounds and has kept it off for 14 years. Carbonell will share her “Fit to the Finish” plan for weight loss that focuses on the percentage of fat in our diets, exercise and portion size;

Jennifer Rumple, the Biggest Loser At Home Winner from “Biggest Loser Season Twelve,” will discuss losing 145 pounds while battling a serious knee injury on The Ranch. Jennifer weighed her heaviest at 365 pounds on her 39th birthday. Now 40 and 180 pounds lighter, she feels her new, healthy lifestyle and physical body finally match who she is on the inside. She’s dedicated to inspiring others to make smart choices about nutrition and fitness and to live the most healthy, happy and amazing life possible;

Bernie Salazar, the Biggest Loser At Home Winner from “Biggest Loser Season Five”, is now committed to helping combat the childhood obesity epidemic that is literally weighing down our nation’s kids. His book Monstercise focuses on getting kids up and active by encouraging them to use their imagination as they participate in a series of fun and exciting movements with the help of an imaginary little monster named Frank;

Michael Tischler, DDS, a dentist with a private practice in Woodstock, will discuss gum disease and overall health, eating disorders and oral issues for women, pregnancy and oral health, and healthy dental self-esteem.

Liz Neporent, a health and fitness expert, writer and social media consultant, will also moderate a panel of the main stage speakers in the afternoon, giving the audience additional time to ask questions. Neporent is a regular contributor to ABC News where her influential online Reporter’s Notebook series covers a diversity of health topics such as the psychology of barefoot running and obesity in fruit flies. She is author and coauthor of more than 15 health books including Fitness for Dummies, now in its 4th edition and Weight Training for Dummies, now in its 3rd edition.

In addition to the main stage speakers, workshops on a variety of topics will be offered during the day, including: Management of Infertility and da Vinci Robotics, Myths and Facts of the Supplement Industry, Living Well in Spite of Endometriosis, and You Have The Power to Heal Yourself. Eight fitness demonstrations will also take place throughout the Expo, among them: Body Flow, Zumba and Zumba Gold for Seniors, Smart Bells, Dance Like No One is Watching, along with others in cooperation with the YMCA and MAC Fitness. More than half a dozen chefs will offer cooking demonstrations.

Held at Tech City in previous years, this year’s Expo is moving to its new location at the M. Clifford Miller School because the increased space and layout there are better suited to main stage needs, cooking facilities, weight and fitness rooms and the ever-growing number of health and fitness professionals and exhibitors who will be participating, according to Dr. Debra Karnasciewicz, founder and director of the not-for-profit Women’s Health and Fitness Foundation and the Expo.

Event details including online tickets and up-to-the-minute schedules can be found at http://www.womenshealthexpo.com.

Top-Rated Diet in America Can Improve Employee Health and Productivity; Obesity Expert Robert Kushner Presents 2012′s Best Diets in Alere Wellbeing’s Free Webinar

Top-Rated Tone Detox in America Can Improve Employee Health and Productivity; Obesity Expert Robert Kushner Presents 2012′s Best Diets in Alere Wellbeing’s Free Webinar

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) April 30, 2012

Alere Wellbeing will host the complimentary live webinar, Deconstructing DASH: How Your Workforce Would Benefit from America’s #1 Rated Tone Detox, on May 15 and May 22 at 11:00am PDT. Obesity expert, Robert F. Kushner, MD, Clinical Director of the Northwestern Comprehensive Center on Obesity, will provide an overview of the DASH Tone Detox, compare it with other top-rated diets, and offer insight into the evidence behind its design. He will also discuss the keys to sustainable weight loss and best practices for employers selecting a worksite weight loss plan.

In January, the U.S. News & World Report released its list of Best Diets for 2012. Dr. Kushner, an internationally recognized expert in the care of overweight and obese patients, was among 22 thought leaders specializing in Tone Detox, nutrition, obesity, food psychology, diabetes, and heart disease who were asked to rank 25 popular diets. For the second year in a row, the DASH Tone Detox, the government-endorsed Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension Tone Detox, came in first.

Obese workers cost U.S. private employers an estimated $ 45 billion or more in healthcare costs and productivity losses each year. Employers know they would be hard pressed to find adults in their organizations who do not want to eat healthfully, lose weight, and reduce the risk of chronic disease. Unfortunately, most diets do not work, and employers are at a loss for how to educate their staff on better nutrition.

“Sustainable weight loss is difficult, but with an evidence-based approach and the right support, it is possible for an obese or overweight employee to make significant health improvements,” said Dr. Kushner. “Creating a corporate culture that educates staff on good nutrition, encourages active lifestyles, and reinforces healthy behavior change at a personal level can change your organization, the lives of your employees, and the longevity of your community.”

Dr. Kushner’s approach to sustainable weight loss includes improving Tone Detox, increasing physical activity, and engaging in personalized behavior change, as well as pharmacotherapy and bariatric surgery when appropriate. Dr. Kushner formerly served as president of The Obesity Society (TOS), the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN), and the American Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists (ABPNS). He is currently the first president of the new American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) and a board member of the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC). He is on the editorial board for Obesity and the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

Join Dr. Kushner Tuesday, May 15 or Tuesday, May 22 for Alere Wellbeing’s complimentary webinar, Deconstructing DASH: How Your Workforce Would Benefit from America’s #1 Rated Tone Detox. To register for the webinar, visit http://www.alerewellbeing.com/clearinsights/.

WellBalance Joins Efforts to Improve Health on World Health Day April 7, 2012

Weight Loss Camp Campers & Staff

Asheville, NC (PRWEB) April 06, 2012

WellBalance, which operates fitness and weight loss camps for teens, kids, and young adults ages 10 – 20, is supporting the 2012 World Health Day campaign for aging and health.

World Health Day April 7. 2012 focuses on ageing and health with the campaign slogan: “Good health adds life to years.” This emphasis is designed to influence people to live as healthy as possible in order to maximize the number of years they get to live pain and illness free.

“Everything WellBalance’s fitness and weight loss camp does supports this World Health Effort as WellBalance works on helping families lead happier, healthier lives,” said John Taylor, celebrity fitness expert and Vice President of Programs for WellBalance. “It’s imperative people understand that the decisions they make now can affect their ability to live a longer life.”

According to WHO research, people from all parts of the world are now starting to live longer, in part due to advances in medical care and pharmaceuticals. However, the WHO warns that it is more important than ever to lead a healthy lifestyle. Since the world population is living longer, funding for healthcare may run out, and treating the elderly for illness and disease may become more difficult.

In many cases, the costs associated with treating the sick and injured can impoverish an entire family. This is why preventing disease through long-term healthy lifestyle habits is the best defense for avoiding debilitation and financial burden.

The WHO also found that heart disease and stroke are the biggest causes of death for people around the world, and in many cases, treatable and avoidable high blood pressure was a key contributor to these losses in life. Studies show that obese indivdiuals are more likely to develop heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure, as well as many forms of cancer, than their healthy weight peers.

As part of the World Health Day events, WellBalance will take an active role in teaching weight loss campers and their families ways to develop healthier habits that can be maintained into their elder years. To do this, WellBalance will implement healthy living curriculums that adhere to the following WHO health guidelines:

Be physically active, eat a healthy Tone Detox, and avoid the harmful use of alcohol and tobacco products to reduce the risk of chronic disease in older age.
Minimize the consequences of chronic disease through early detection and quality care.
Create physical and social environments that foster the health and participation of older people.
Reinvent ageing by changing social attitudes of what old age is, and encourage the participation of older people.

“The WHO recognizes that people from all over the world are living longer due to advances in medical technology,” continued Mr. Taylor, “But if we all live healthier– eating right and getting exercise–we can prevent avoidable illnesses and increase our longevity without medical intervention. WellBalance campers and families come to us because they realize that they aren’t living the healthiest of lifestyles, and we help them make positive changes that will help them to avoid premature death and crippling disease.”

For questions or information about how WellBalance is helping overweight and obese children, teens, and young adults counter bullying, please contact John Gordon, CEO of WellBalance at (800) 975-0435 or visit our website http://www.WellBalance.com for more information.

Achieva Weight Loss

(PRWEB) March 30, 2012

The less healthy the lifestyle, the more the cost of health and life insurance can go up. Succeed Laboratories, the makers of Achieva™ Weight Loss who introduced their product as a way to get back into a favorite pair of jeans, are now making an appeal to the financial lifestyle. “We want to show you how our program can slim your body and fatten your wallet,” says Jeff Lefkowitz, company spokesman.

Expressing its dedication to weight loss and establishing a healthier lifestyle, the makers of Achieva™ are offering 100 complimentary ($ 49.95 value) 30 day supply of Achieva to those that qualify. NAPW Erie Chapter Discussed Health, Wellness and Organization for Professional Women at Networking Meetings

No Comments 29 March 2012

NAPW Erie Chapter Discussed Health, Wellness and Organization for Professional Women at Networking Meetings

Garden City, NY (PRWEB) November 04, 2011

The Erie Chapter held a meeting on March 9th, 2011 at Decision Associates’ offices and called to order at 5:30pm. In attendance were Sue Moore, Marian Taylor, Yvonne Horn, Diana Denniston, and Terri Koebe.

Marian provided delicious sandwiches and Sue provided delightful chocolate brownies complete with chocolate icing and well as beverages and chips. It was decided to reschedule the presentation from Marian “Downsize Your Purse” until the chapter’s next meeting on April 13, 2011.

The focus for this meeting was for members to continue to get to know each other and eventually evolved into a very dynamic discussion regarding health, wellness and environment. Some of the highlights included:

Weight loss: People need 20 grams of protein needed at every meal and 70% of weight loss comes from Tone Detox, while 30% comes from exercise. Free range chicken is best as there are no steroids or antibiotics and cow milk and dairy products causes belly fat on women.

The hazards of plastic: Carcinogens cause cancer, plastic should not be heated in microwaves and people should always look for plastics that are BPA free. The group also discussed how the lack of preservatives, more manual labor, and less stress were contributors to older generations living healthier lives but noted this generation is living longer. The chapter also noted that European countries do not use plastic bags for groceries, rather they use reusable cloth bags. They also typically purchase their food fresh daily and do more home cooking.

Clean water: Kangas is a new water system just hitting the market that provides variety of different Ph levels. People need good balance with acidic and alkaline. An interesting fact was shared that lemons and limes are alkaline and blueberries are acidic.

Gluten: It appears more people are developing sensitivity to wheat and barley and this may be caused by the genetic altering that has been going on for some time. FOOD INC is a movie that discusses what has been done to people’s crops, starting with soy beans.

The chapter noted that moderation is key with all foods and that people should limit sugar intake. Some dieticians recommend alight snack containing protein every 3-4 hours.

The chapter’s discussion moved to the idea that children appear to be more and more over stimulated. The group’s observations included that children are easily bored and like to watch TV or play video games; Christmas as a prime example that children are programmed to expect more gifts. Some members have experienced Christmas celebrations with gift opening that is an all day event. Members suggested limiting gifts to one per person and buying gifts for an underprivileged family and involving the children so they have a better appreciation of what they have.

Excess seems to be rampant in America. Many cases of hoarding in Erie, some of the possible causes include people who have lived through the Great Depression are more likely to hoard, people may be lonely or elderly with no visitors and may be prone to buying QVC or HSN so they will be visited by the UPS or USPS delivery person.

Sue also noted important upcoming events for the chapter:

    March 27th, 3pm
    Free concern
    First
First United Methodist Church, 707 Sassafras Street, Erie
Celebrating 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day in support of the Ophelia Project
    March 25, 2011
    Women In Leadership Development (WILD)
    Erie Bayfront Convention Center
    Cost $ 125 per person
Sponsored by Gannon Small Business Development Center (SBDC)

The group’s next meeting will be held on April 13th at Decision Associates. “Members will learn about organization and undoubtedly have an interesting and lively presentation from Marian on how to ‘Downsize Your Purse’,” Sue said. The meeting adjourned at 7:30pm.

The Erie chapter then held a meeting on April 13, 2011 at the Decision Associates’ offices and was called to order at 5:45pm by Sue Moore, President.

Members in attendance included Sue Moore, Marian Taylor, Yvonne Horn, Nicole (Barber Institute), and Katie (Barber Institute). Marian agreed to send out postcards or a flyer to increase member attendance to meetings.

Marian suggested that in June, the group have a meeting which would include a walking tour. This would be of Millionaire Row. Gloria Booth is the contact person for the walking tour.

Sue brought two new people from the Barber Institute up-to-date regarding the Chapter’s activities: The chapter writes their own minutes and sends them to National. National will review, approve and post them to the website. The Chapter will not be meeting in July or August. For the September meeting, the group plans to have a style/fashion show and then send out invitations to solicit more participation at the monthly meetings. They also plan to put together a program for the first three months of the new fiscal year.

Marian talked about a short news clip entitled “I’m a Dirty Little Secret” that discusses the hazards of school buses using regular gas versus bio-diesel fuel. She pointed out that a local company, previously called Lake Erie Bio Fuels, mostly ships out of the country – because we do not use it much here in the US.

At 5:55pm, Marian started her presentation. In consisted of three components: chicken salad preparation, sample shakes and simple solutions to clean out of the clutter in your purse.

Chicken Salad Preparation

Marian shopped at Wegman’s and purchased the ingredients for the salad which she agreed to prepare for the meeting. The ingredients were already sliced and/or stored in individual containers or plastic bags. She mixed them together, as part of her presentation. They included: spring mix with herbs, rotisserie chicken, cucumbers (Pink Lady), apples, craisins, almonds and salad dressing. Note: Marian tries to get three meals out of a rotisserie chicken – chicken pieces, chicken salad and chicken soup.

Sample Shakes

The shakes that Marian made for us to try utilized a powder mix from Visalus, for whom she is an independent distributor. The following comments were noted: The shakes are a complete meal and there are non-genetically modified things in the shake. Each shake is gluten-free, heart healthy and heart smart. Marian normally uses almond milk or coconut milk in her shakes. Pure Almond Milk by Silk can be purchased at Wal-Mart. She instructed to add eight (8) ounces of milk to two (2) scoops of shake powder. Marian used a Hamilton Beach blender that costs approximately $ 14. She drinks two shakes a day, which takes care of two of her meals. Note: This costs $ 99 for two bags of shake powder, or $ 49 each.

Marian also suggested to burn fat, one should eat every three hours. She purchases her deodorant and toothpaste from Tom’s of Maine. Marian also briefly talked about Asbury Woods and passed around a document outlining some of their activities.

Simple Solutions to Clean Out the Clutter in your Purse

Dump out everything in your purse
Get two bags- One for trash and one for stuff to go someplace else
Sort items in the purse, by type (eg, money, ink pens, make-up, etc.)
Get a container for your make-up
Get a plastic envelope for your receipts and coupons
Wallet – Marian showed an example of that she likes which is by Lotus. It is sold by Trellis in Erie and costs $ 109
Get a purse key finder – These can be purchased at All That Glitters or Charming Charlie’s (next to Macy’s), where everything is organized by color.
Get a card wheel, to collect business cards
Select a day to clean out your purse (and your car) each week. Marian picked Friday.

Marian provided pointers on how to select a purse. She suggested getting a purse with a lighter lining, and getting a purse with feet on the bottom. Anyone can take an existing purse to a shoe maker to have feet put on the bottom of their purse. This reduces the amount of filth/germs with which someone will come into contact when handling their purse. She also suggested getting a purse with pockets to help you organize your things.

Marian distributed handouts of the following:

“Tips To Keeping An Organized Purse” (by Marian Taylor)
    “Why kangen water?” (from mykangentools.com)
“Is Your Drinking Water Toxic?” (from mykangentools.com)
    “Plastic” (from MedicineNet.com)
“BPA Receipts Bombshell: Paper Slips Contain High Levels of Bisphenol A”
“15 Ways to Make Your Food Safer” (from MedicineNet.com)
“Choosing Cleaner Products to Clean Our Bodies” (by Suzanne Somers, Sexy Forever: How to Fight Fat)

The Erie Local Chapter will hold their next meeting on May 11, 2011 at 5:30pm. They plan to eat at 5:30 and begin their formal meeting at 6:30pm. Nicole offered to find someone to speak about gardening. Sue told everyone about her business, Decision Associates. She and her husband have been in business for 27 years. They do Strategic Planning, Marketing Plans and Coaching. Also, they sponsor Peer Groups –and have done so for fifteen years. Case studies are used with these groups.

Sue received an email from Kyle at Lowe’s as they want to increase the number of women on their team. Marian suggested that they sponsor an NAPW meeting at their store on Peach Street.

The meeting adjourned at 7:15pm. However, the chapter continued to discuss various things until about 7:40pm.

Integrity Health Coaching for Women Debunks the 5 Common “Myths” in Fitness

Rocco Boulay

Manchester, NH (PRWEB) March 06, 2012

It’s truly amazing how the media has confused many people about fitness and what they can do to get into better shape. The reality is that there is no “one” thing. It is a synergy between eating, exercising and “thinking” properly. Without the knowledge to understand the components to health most people will ultimately fail. Below are 5 myths that we have debunked along with a few tips to help you achieve your goals.

Myth # 1 – Crunches and abdominal work will get rid of the fat around my waist.

Answer: Not true. Unfortunately there is no such thing as “spot reducing” any area of your body. This holds true for all body parts. The truth is you can only firm up the muscles underneath the fatty area. Because everyone genetically stores his or her fat in certain areas it normally is a rule of thumb that the first place the fat (typically the belly and thighs) comes on is the last place it comes off.

Tip: Revisit what you are eating and replace those foods with those rich in protein and complex carbohydrates. Eat fats that are poly and monounsaturated while avoiding foods that contain trans fats. Don’t believe what you see on television. Take your vitamins.

Myth #2 – If your not sweating, your not burning calories.

Answer: Not true. All work burns calories. The body sweating is its way of keeping cool. Not everybody perspires profusely during exercise. Although sweating is great for detoxifying the body and keeping it cool, the amount of calories it takes to jog a mile is the same for everyone, whether you are sweating or not.

Tip: If you want to increase your caloric expenditure try 12-15 minutes of moderate cardio upon rising first thing in the morning before eating. This will increase your metabolic rate for the whole day, increasing daily calorie expenditure.

Myth #3 – Muscle weighs more than fat.

Answer: Six of one or ½ dozen of the other is a common phrase. Five pounds of muscle and five pounds of fat weigh “5 pounds”. The real answer is 5lbs. of muscle is DENSER than 5lbs. of fat. This means that if you replaced 5 lbs. of fat with 5lbs. of muscle you would weigh the same but your measurements would be smaller. Just think of a golf ball as (muscle) and a tennis ball as (fat) and see that they weigh about the same thing but the golf ball is denser, therefore it takes up less space.

Tip: Eat healthy foods along with lean protein, be the golf ball.

Myth #4 – I will get BIG if I lift weights.

Answer: Not true. Women especially those who are trying to lose fat struggle with this concept. Because many women start weight training at a body fat percentage that is high they run into an apparent issue. The issue is that upon embarking on a weight-training program the muscles begin to fill out BEFORE the fat is burned away. Although the new muscles are what are necessary to burn the excess fat moving forward many women stop weight training and lose the fat loss benefits of added muscle.

Tip: Every effective weight loss program that contains weight training will begin with weight gain. Be patient with yourself and just understand that if you continue with a healthy Tone Detox and exercise plan that employs weights you will look and feel great before you know it.

Myth #5 – Cardiovascular exercises are the most effective at burning fat.

Answer: Not true. The truth is that walking at approximately 3.5 mph for one hour burns approximately 500 calories. There are actually 3500 calories in a pound of fat. How many hours would it take you to lose 10 lbs. ? The answer is 3500 cal. in 1lb. fat /500 cal. during 1 hr. cardio = 7 hours. It would take 7 hours of cardio to lose 1 pound. Now multiply that by 10lbs. to lose and you get 70 hours.

Tip: Although cardiovascular exercise is a component of good health it is not meant to be the modality for fat loss. The best way to lose weight is to lift weights 3 times per week, perform 20 minutes of cardio 3 times per week, stretch following your exercise bouts, and stop eating foods that are packaged and processed.

United Security Life and Health Life Insurance Offers Tips to Prevent Unhealthy Weight Gain During the Holiday Season

Bedford Park, IL (PRWEB) October 31, 2011

Statistics show that the average American gains one to two pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. And although that does not seem like a lot, statistics also show that most Americans do not lose that weight. (http://www.webmd.com/Tone Detox/features/holiday-foods-Tone Detox) Year after year, those extra pounds can add up and contribute to being overweight or obesity later in life. United Security Life and Health Insurance Company offer an easy to follow guide to help avoid holiday weight gain this year.

“With the already hectic schedules most Americans have, and then adding-in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, along with festive parties, healthy eating and exercise are usually the first things to go. The result unfortunately is unwanted and unhealthy extra pounds by the start of the New Year,” explained Leonard Hertko, M.D., Medical Advisor, United Security Life and Health. “No one wants to be on a strict Tone Detox over the holidays. We all want to enjoy the abundance of traditional favorite foods. This can be achieved with a little planning and keeping-in-mind a few healthy tips.”

Dr. Hertko offers the following tips this holiday season:

1.     Never go to a party hungry. It is important not to skip meals or go to a festive function on an empty stomach. If you do, you are more likely to overeat and consume extra calories.

2.    Watch your alcohol consumption. In addition to the dangers of consuming too much alcohol, drinks are loaded with empty calories that can add-up fast. Alcohol can expand your appetite since it causes an increase in the acid level in your stomach, which in turn makes you feel hungrier.

3.    Stay active. People who are more active during the holidays do not gain weight. It is important to squeeze at least 15 extra minutes of exercise into your day. This can easily be achieved by taking the stairs at work instead of the elevator, taking the dog for a walk, or doing something active with your children. The point is, you want to balance your exercise level with your calorie consumption. By doing this, you will not gain that extra holiday weight.

4.    Keep your portions small. When going through the buffet line, do not load-up your plate with giant size portions. Smaller sized samples of your favorite foods will keep you satisfied and will help avoid that overstuffed, uncomfortable feeling.

5.    Make smart choices. To shave calories, go easy on the nuts, cheeses, cream sauces, gravy, butter, and whipped cream. All of these foods are high in fat and will quickly increase your calorie intake. Add more fruits and vegetables to your Tone Detox, both offer less calories and are healthier for you. Enjoy just one of your favorite desserts, and stay away from eating handfuls of cookies and other small desserts which you are more likely to over eat on.

Dr. Hertko concluded, “If you keep these helpful tips in mind, when you attend your next holiday gathering you will be armed with the tools needed to manage your calorie intake and avoid those extra holiday pounds. Obesity can lead to potentially serious health problems including heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. In addition, being obese can affect a person’s overall quality of life which can lead to depression.”
